San Francisco Presidio to Golden Gate Bridge

The Presidio

Distance: 2.7 Miles Elevation Gain/Loss 105/225

This short section through the Presidio is best when combined with other routes. We combined it with the Golden Gate Bridge crossing, and back again. Consider adding the Batteries to Bluffs Trail if you’re looking for more milage.

The section begins at the Presidio Gate at the north end of Arguello Blvd and alternates between the trails and roads of the park. Alcatraz comes into view shortly after entering the park, but you can head off trail for a short walk to Inspiration Point for even better views across the bay.

After crossing Arguello Blvd, the trail passes The Spire, an art installation made from felled cypress trees in 2008, which has since been severely damaged in a 202 fire.

The charcoaled structure remains impressive, but perhaps less so. It now stands as a contrast to the surrounding trees that it once to be appeared part of.

Further along, the Ridge Trail bypasses an overlook behind the National Cemetery. The cemetery overlook is another quick side trip worth taking and offers one of the first views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

From here the trail winds through groves of eucalyptus before emerging at the coast for more spectacular views of the bridge and the coastline, finally ending at the entrance the walking path along the bridge.
